William Scott

William J. Scott, 96 died peacefully on Sunday, May 31, 2015. Mr. Scott was born on May 15, 1919 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of the late Dr. William J. Scott and Florence Upshur, both natives of Northampton County. His family has resided on The Eastern Shore of Virginia for many generations. He grew up in Grosse Pointe Michigan and graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1938. He came back to Virginia to attend Washington and Lee University, receiving his bachelor's degree in May of 1942. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy as an Ensign. He completed his service in February of 1946 as a Senior Lieutenant. He married Roberta Billups, of Mobile, Alabama, on December 29, 1942. Upon release from the Navy to inactive duty in February of 1946, he was hired by the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse. He went on to pass his CPA exam in 1950 and had his own accounting firm for over thirty years. During those years he and Roberta lived in Grosse Pointe, Michigan and raised their three children. Every summer he would return with his family on vacation to visit The Eastern Shore and The Chesapeake Bay. During his career, he was an active member of the Michigan CPA Association, serving as chairman of the Membership Committee and Chairman of Relations with Attorneys. He was also a member of the Federal Tax Committee for 18 years before his retirement to Hendersonville, North Carolina. His wife, Roberta, passed away on March 19, 1974. He later married Ruth Bailey of Charlotte, North Carolina. He was a lifelong Presbyterian and was very involved in the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church in Michigan as an Elder, Treasurer and Captain of the ushering team. Following his retirement, he served as a judge of the North Carolina Mums Society, which he thoroughly enjoyed. His last years were spent at a retirement community in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth, who passed away this past August. He is survived by his three children, Margaret S. Bonneau, of Columbus, Ohio, William J. Scott and his wife, Jacki, of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan and Dr. David Scott and his wife, Andrea, of Eastville; 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 3:30 PM at Cape Charles cemetery with Reverend Dr.Eugene Soud officiating.
