William Edmund "Jiggs" Dunton, 94, of Exmore, son of the late Ernest Mapp Dunton, Sr. and Maggie Lankford Dunton, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2012 in Nassawadox. Jiggs was a native of the Eastern Shore who graduated from Franktown-Nassawadox High School. He received his B.S. degree in Agronomy from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1940. He served with the United States Army in the Pacific campaign in World War II from 1942 to 1945. He returned to the Shore and taught vocational agriculture and shop at Central High School until his retirement in 1981. He also owned and operated Dunton's Nursery from his home, selling shrubbery and Christmas trees to many Shore residents. He was a dedicated gardener and enjoyed woodworking, completing many projects for his family over the years. Jiggs was a member of Belle Haven Presbyterian Church, serving at various times as treasurer, deacon and elder. He was predeceased by his wife, Anne Jacob Dunton, two brothers, Henry Lankford Dunton, Sr. and Ernest Mapp Dunton, Jr., and a brother-in-law, Joe A. Duer, Sr. He is survived by two daughters, Susan Dunton Nottingham (and husband Spencer) of Franktown and Linda Mapp Dunton of Exmore, a sister, Virginia Dunton Duer of Belle Haven, two grandchildren, Spencer Wright Nottingham, Jr. (and wife Sarah) and Nan Nottingham Sterling (and husband Brandon) of Exmore and a great-grandson, Severn William Nottingham of Exmore. He is also survived by seven nephews and ten nieces. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Doughty Funeral Home in Exmore with the Reverend Alex Joyner officiating.
