Walter Ostrander, 79, husband of Ann Kovacevich Ostrander and a resident of Cape Charles, VA, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2015 at his residence. He was a native of Boston, MA. He was a United States Air Force Veteran, retired self-employed graphic artist and member of American Legion Post #56. Walter loved the outdoors, particularly camping and fishing. Wherever he lived, he found the most peaceful freshwater lakes and rivers or tributaries of the Atlantic Ocean to fish with his friends and family. Some of his favorites included the Shenandoah River, Lake Lunga, Burke Lake, Chopawamsic Creek, Kiptopeke State Park, Chesapeake Bay, Oyster Inlet and the Barrier Islands of Virginia, North River, Wier River, Parson's Beach and others throughout his life. "The Gut", which he visited or fished for over 75 years, was probably closest to his heart. His favorite fish to catch was usually the one he was fishing for at the time and he had an uncanny way of always catching the largest trout, whether it was a rainbow trout in Chopawamsic Creek or spotted sea trout in the Chesapeake Bay. Walter was a very giving man as well. From his days in Brandon Court, he would come home with ice cream sandwiches to give to all the kids in the neighborhood. They would all run to him and swarm around him each summer evening when he came home. Most of all, he would make sure anyone who came to his home felt at home, giving whatever he could to make the moment special. Most recently his time on the Eastern Shore and his friends there, he would always make sure they had a cold drink in their hands and something to eat if hungry. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Michael Ostrander and his wife, Lynda, of Richmond, VA, Katherine Ostrander of Stafford, VA, David Ostrander of Cape Charles; a brother, Richard Ostrander of Rhode Island and a grandson, Michael J. Ostrander of Richmond. A graveside service with Military Honors will be conducted Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 12:00 PM at Quantico National Cemetery with Reverend David Moser officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Eastern Shore, 165 Market Street, Suite #3, Onancock, VA 23417.
