Vernon Thomas Sterling, 88, devoted and loving husband of the late Rhoda Hargis Sterling and a resident of Wachapreague, VA, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015 at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Nassawadox, VA. A native of Wachapreague, he was the son of the late Vernon Cecil Sterling and the late Ethel Bulman Sterling. He served in the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard, was a retired brick mason and member of Bible Baptist Church. Mr. Sterling loved training rabbit dogs and going to horse shows.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth T. Sterling, Sr. and his wife, Annabell, of Pungoteague, VA; a daughter, Vickie Jones and her husband, Linwood, of Keller, VA; six grandchildren, April Stevens of Keller, Sterling Valentine of Accomac, VA, Victoria Savage of Accomac, Kassidy A'lexis Jones of Keller, Kenny Sterling of Newport News, VA, Adam Sterling of Wachapreague; and five great grandchildren, D.L. Parkerson, Jr., Ny'Zir Dix, Jayce Strand, Payton Savage, Lena Sterling. In addition to his wife of 69 years, he was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Sterling, a sister, Jessie Wessells and a brother, Joseph Sterling.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Doughty Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Madron and Mr. Vernon Bell officiating. Interment will follow in Wachapreague Cemetery. Family will join friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Riverside Shore Cancer Center, Post Office Box 17, Nassawadox, VA 23413.
