Shirley Gillett entered into God's Kingdom on Friday, June 5, 2009. She was recovering from lung surgery and passed away suddenly at Sentara Heart Hospital. Shirley was born in Farber, Missouri and attended school there where she was a standout basketball player and an academic. Shirley attended Quincy, Illinois business school and took a job with the Quincy Herald-Whig. Subsequently, she joined the Fish and Wildlife Service at the Mark Twain National Wildlife Refuge. Shirley worked there until 1970 when she moved to the Washington, DC area where she worked with the Bureau of Mines as an administrative assistant. She retired from the federal government in 1988 and moved to Westboro, Massachusetts. Shirley held a number of jobs in the Boston area until 1990 when she moved to Hack's Neck, Virginia. Shirley was preceded into God's Kingdom by her father Walter Filback and mother Marie Filback. She is survived by her husband Jim; children Marla, Kevin, Karen, Linda, Robert; grandchildren Melissa, Kyle and Christopher; great grandchildren Logan and Devon. She is also survived by her sisters, Doris Atkinson and Donna Kenison. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 7, 2009 at 2:00 PM from the Doughty Funeral Home in Exmore. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday, June 8, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Craddockville United Methodist Church.
