Shirl Ann Duer

December 30, 1956 — January 11, 2021

Mrs. Shirl Ann Bradford Duer, 64, wife of David Carter Duer, a resident of Exmore, VA, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021, at home with her family. A native of the Eastern Shore, as an “Army Brat” Mrs. Duer was raised in Virginia, North Carolina, Alaska, and Germany, returning to the Eastern Shore at age 13. Born on December 30, 1956, Mrs. Duer was daughter to the late James P. (Brad) Bradford, Jr. and Shirley B. Bradford.

Mrs. Duer loved and was loved by her husband and their daughter, Amy, and grandchildren, Daniel and Marley. She also mothered and was loved by her nephew, TJ Hrubes, and loved his sons, Tanner and Hunter, like grandchildren. Mrs. Duer worked various jobs until joining her husband running their farm market in Exmore for 11 years. She enjoyed cooking, bingo, her bingo friends and slot machines, never passing up the chance to travel with her husband to Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Las Vegas. Always an optimist who thought nothing was impossible, she was a strong-willed woman who endured and overcame many health issues. She was proud of being the first person to successfully receive the Harrington Rod for scoliosis over 52 years ago.

Mrs. Duer is survived by her husband, her daughter and son-in-law, Daniel, as well as five siblings: Rita Spady and her husband, William, Bill Bradford and his wife, Cindy, Charlotte Wingfield and her husband, Joe, Patricia Manzella and friend, Victor Simpson, and Donna Kellam and her husband, Page. She was predeceased by her youngest brother, James P. (Jim) Bradford, III. Other survivors include 9 nieces and nephews and 13 great nieces and nephews.

A private family gathering was held on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at Doughty Funeral Home, Exmore. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Food Bank of the Eastern Shore, P.O. Box 518, Onley, VA 23418.
