Sherman Major Wessells Jr., 86, of Chincoteague, VA, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, February 13, 2011. Born in Saxis, VA, he was the son of the late Sherman Major Wessells Sr. and Essie Martin Wessells. He saw action in the last few months of World War II, serving in the 6th Division of the Marine Corps on Okinawa. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Carpenter Wessells; two step-daughters, Deanna Lee McDonald and her husband Wesley of Chincoteague, and Constance Ann Eisenhour of Hillsboro, OR; three stepsons, Brian David Roberts of Ledyard, CT, Kim Alan Garcia and his wife Barbara of Breckenridge, CO, and Seth Anthony Garcia and his wife Christina of Fairfield, CA.He also leaves four nieces and two nephews, Betty Faye Hodge, Kathy Wynn, and Ronnie Ward, all of Chesapeake, VA, Rosemary Nelson of Bloxom, VA, Elena Mae Miles of Saxis, and Don Taylor of Florida. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Jessie Sterling Wessells, and three brothers, and three sisters. Sherman loved life and the traveling he did in the last few years. His favorite was going up in a hot air balloon. A memorial service with military honors will be held Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the graveside of Wachapreague Cemetery with Pastor Jonathan Carpenter officiating.
