Ruth C. Swope

Ruth Cook Swope, 99, wife of the late Dr. Ralph E. Swope and a resident of Kennett Square, PA, formerly of Davis Wharf, VA, passed away Friday, January 6, 2012 at The Crosslands in Kennett Square. A native of Manhattan, NY, she was the younger of two daughters of the late Harry J. Cook and the late Emma Rogers Cook. She graduated from George Washington School in New York City. After her marriage, Ruth moved to Westchester County, NY, where she raised four children. She belonged to the Women's Club of Rye, and volunteered for the Red Cross motor corps during World War II. After moving from Rye to Pelham Manor, NY, Ruth was active in the Huguenot Memorial Presbyterian Church and, in 1966, was elected President of The Manor Club. When her late husband, Dr. Ralph E. Swope, retired from his medical practice, they moved to The Eastern Shore of Virginia, where they lived near Davis Wharf for many years. Ruth served as an elder at the Belle Haven Presbyterian Church during that time. In their later years, Ruth and her husband were cared for at The Crosslands, a retirement community in Kennett Square. Ruth is survived by two daughters, Barbara S. Kenedy, Carol S. Breed-McCauley; two sons, William S. Swope, Ralph E. Swope Jr.; nine grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 12:00 PM at Belle Haven Cemetery with Reverend James Moore officiating. Family will join friends Friday evening from 8 to 8:30 PM at the Doughty Funeral Home in Exmore.
