Ruth Underhill Hogg, 98, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017 at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Nassawadox, VA. An Eastern Shore native, she was a resident of the Hidenwood in Newport News, VA and a former resident of Cheriton, VA for forty years. She was the wife of the late Richard L Parks and the late Granville F Hogg, Sr. and the daughter of the late Edmond Arthur Underhill and the late Lucille Chandler Underhill Gibb.
Ruth was a homemaker and lived a long and full life. She spent many years maintaining and renting a small group of cabins in Bayview to travelers and fishermen, making many dear friends along the way. She enjoyed keeping the property looking nice and welcoming, so in the warmer months, friends and passersby could often see her in a large-brimmed, straw hat riding on her Snapper lawnmower or working the numerous flower beds after dinner.
Ruth was devoted to her families, both at home and in church. She was a member of Cheriton United Methodist Church where she served on the board and was a member of the Rainbow Class for many years. Even after moving to Newport News, she kept in contact with her Eastern Shore church friends and took great pride in hosting a luncheon for them each year around Christmas.
When Ruth was not occupied by family duties, church duties or yard work, she enjoyed traveling in the company of cherished friends, on an organized bus tour or with family members. She enjoyed trips of any length or distance, but counted among her biggest adventures a trip to Hawaii.
She is survived by three children, Rebecca P. Vail of Amherst, VA, Carole H. Sorensen and her husband, Robert, of Chesapeake, VA, Granville F. Hogg, Jr. and his wife, Gwyn, of Cape Charles, VA; a sister, Sue U. Flansburg of Newport News; a brother, Arthur Underhill and his wife, Frances, of Machipongo, VA; four grandchildren, Maureen Vail, Susan Staton, Jennifer Hogg, Mataline Donovan; a great grandson, Dillon Vail; a nephew and numerous nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Wilkins-Doughty Funeral Home with Reverend Janet C. Allen officiating. Interment will be private in Cape Charles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cheriton United Methodist Church, c/o Jo Ann Heneghan, P.O. Box 297, Cheriton, VA 23316.
