Robert W. Wells, 86, known to friends and family as Bob, passed away Monday, October 19, 2009. He was born and raised in Orange, Va., where he met his wife of 69 years, Wyvetta Craun Wells. Bob soon went to WWII serving from 1943 - 1945 in the Merchant Marines. He returned to live in Tidewater for the next 60 years. He learned construction after the war and worked in commercial building construction until he retired. Not one to stay inactive, he and his wife traveled both home and abroad for many years while Bob shared his knowledge and experience by supervising on various construction projects. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his wife Wyvetta; his daughter Nancy Wells and her husband Richard Drury of Jamesville (Bob and his wife have resided with their daughter in Jamesville on the Eastern Shore for the past three years); his son Robert H. Wells and wife Janice of Virginia Beach; granddaughter Lee Anne Drury McMurry, her husband Thomas and two great-granddaughters Clare Lee and Mary Wells McMurry of Williamsburg; and his grandson Robert Lee Drury and wife Carole of Topsom, ME.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 24 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Jamesville, VA. A gathering of family and friends at the Drury's home, 4620 Peaceful Shores Drive, Jamesville, will follow the service. The family asks that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Research Fund at Southeastern Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 6350 Center Drive, #102, Norfolk, VA 23502 or to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 142 W. York St., Norfolk, VA 23510 in Bob's name.
