O.M. Stevenson, III

March 9, 1941 — June 17, 2008

O.M. "Steve" Stevenson III, 67, of Eastville passed away June 17, 2008 while vacationing in Colorado with his family. He was the son of the late Oscar Milton Stevenson, Jr. and Elizabeth Jean Willis Stevenson of Richmond, Virginia. He is survived by his wife Jonellen "Jonny" Thompson Stevenson; two children, son, Lee Stevenson and wife Lara, of Glen Ellyn, Illinois and daughter, Meg Larabee and husband Sonny of Ahoskie, North Carolina; a stepdaughter, Meghan Neville and husband Scott of Cheriton, Virginia. Survivors also include two brothers, George Stevenson and wife Martha of Universal City, Texas and Bill Stevenson of Urbanna, Virginia. Steve's pride and joy were his ten grandchildren, Taylor, Jack, and Natalie of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; Trace, Cade, Landon, and Hennie of Ahoskie, North Carolina; and Wynn, Macie, and Beckett of Cheriton, Virginia, each graced with his intellect, athleticism, mischief, and wit. Steve graduated from Douglas Freeman High School in Richmond, Virginia in 1959 where he was an outstanding football and basketball player and a track star. Steve attended the University of Richmond on a football scholarship. He graduated in 1963 with a double major in political science and English. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He, and his then wife, Peggy, moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia from Richmond for Steve to begin a career teaching English and coaching at Broadwater Academy when it opened in 1966. Steve coached many outstanding teams while at Broadwater and left a lasting impression on many of his students. In 1977 Steve began a more than 26 year career with Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Company. He qualified for Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company's Round Table five times and All Star nine times. He consistently met the stringent requirements of, and was designated a "Master Agent" for Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Company. Steve was a gifted story-teller who lived his life in a way that ensured that he always had new stories to tell. He loved fishing, playing tennis, kayaking, and smoking a good cigar. His quick humor, tall tales, and genuine smile will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 11:00 AM at "Elkington", 16111 Elkington Road, Eastville with the Rev. Harry W. Crandall officiating.
