Minnie Stockley Lovett of Keller passed away peacefully at Heritage Hall on December 9, 2015, a month after her 94th birthday. The daughter of N H and Sally (Johnson) Stockley, Minnie was born in Snow Hill, Maryland on November 7, 1921, and was the youngest of seven children. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Joseph Lovett, an Illinois farm boy turned Coast Guardsman whom she met during WWII. She lived on the Shore her entire life except for the time spent working at the Norfolk Naval Base during the war.
In her early retirement years, she and Joe were avid golfers, playing nearly every weekday at Cape Charles prior to his passing over eighteen years ago. They and several other couples nourished lasting friendships on their weekly zig-zag path down the fairways and roughs enroute to the 18th hole. A rabid Redskins fan to the end, she lived long enough to watch the Skins recently beat the Saints by over 30 points. Minnie, who worked in retail in Exmore for much of her life, was known for her friendly and humorous nature. She was a member of Hollies Baptist Church, and midlife, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School there.
Joe and Minnie raised two sons, both of whom reside in Virginia. Don and wife Candee live in Smithfield, and Than and wife Ruthellen live in Onancock. Granddaughter Tracie lives in Pennsylvania. Minnie is also survived by one sister, Virginia Hutchens, of Smithfield, as well as numerous nieces and nephews along the Atlantic coastal states and within or close to Illinois. If there was anything she loved as much as her family and her Lord and Savior, it was a cat - any cat - absolutely any cat - which amazes her sons to this day as she seemed rather impartial to them when they were growing up.
The family wishes to express their thanks to her many friends and neighbors who helped look after her, but especially in her final years. And thanks to her extended family, bingo buddies and fans at Heritage Hall.
A graveside service and celebration of life will be held at Belle Haven cemetery on Monday December 14 at 11:00 AM, presided over by Reverend Elizabeth Freund. Honorary pallbearers are friends Blair Stewart, John Lee Nottingham, Greg Nottingham, and nephews Joe Bryant, Dick Stoakley and Alan DeFend. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hollies Baptist Church, Post Office Box 7, Keller, VA 23401 or to Heritage Hall Residents Activity Fund, Post Office Box 176, Nassawadox, VA 23413.
