Mrs. Maxine M. Bayly, 64, a resident of Belle Haven, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at home with her husband of 38 years. Maxine's sharp intelligence and passion for learning lead her to a successful career as an academic, scientist and teacher. Maxine held advanced degrees in Biology and Education. She held a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Alabama and a Master's Degree from Wake Forest University. While working on her Master's Degree, she traveled to The Galapagos Islands and other off-shore scientific expeditions where she had the privilege of discovering five new species of aquatic life. A beloved and respected high school teacher, Maxine dedicated 30 years of her life to teaching young minds biology and chemistry in both the Gloucester and York County school systems. Maxine's positive outlook, generous spirit and kind-hearted nature touched many in her community. Maxine was a devoted and active member of Bethany United Methodist Church where she enjoyed leadership roles such a Worship Chairman, singing in the choir, and volunteering with outreach ministries where she traveled to Alaska, West Virginia and Franklin, Va. A talented artisan, Maxine loved crafting, sewing, shopping with the girls, playing cards, boating with her husband and traveling to visit her grandchildren. She constantly channeled her energetic spirit into improving and uplifting the people, projects and places around her. She possessed an enormous, inspiring love for her family and friends - a love we will cherish in our hearts forever. We lovingly remember her as a tireless-giver, patient teacher, and most of all, a loving mother and grandmother who devoted so much of her time, energy and love to her family. She was born in 1944 in Reform, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her father, Elmo McGinty of Reform, AL and adoptive father, James R. Miles of Mathews, Va.
