Mary Stewart Buford Peery, 90, wife of the late Robert Campbell Peery from Tazewell,VA, and both residents of Richmond,VA, died peacefully Friday, October 23, 2015 in Accomac, VA. Mary Stewart was a native of Lawrenceville, VA and the daughter of Robert Pegram Buford, Jr. and Edith Rawlings Buford. She was a graduate of Longwood College, Class of 1947. After graduation, she taught library science and elementary school in Richmond, Ashland, and Culpepper, VA before marrying. She and her family were members of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Richmond. As common for her generation, Mary Stewart lived a life of quiet, courageous stoicism, and she helped to build and provide a foundation of love and support for her husband, four children, five grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
She is survived by Jennie Buford Peery Baumann Budd and her husband, George, of Harborton, VA, Robert Campbell Peery, Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of Richmond, John Stewart Peery of Richmond and William McGuire Peery and his wife, Colleen of Falls Church, VA. She was preceded in death by her twin brother, Robert Pegram Buford, III.
A celebration of life service will be conducted Friday, October 30, 2015 at 4:00 PM at St. George's Episcopal Church in Pungoteague, VA with Reverend Cameron Randle officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorials be made in honor of Mary Stewart's life to The Churches of St. George's Parish, Post Office Box 540, Accomac, VA 23301.
