John Waverly Spence, 68, husband of Jean Clark Spence and a resident of Birdsnest, VA, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2015 at his residence. A native of Exmore, VA, he was the son of the late Irving W. Spence and the late Dorothy Bailey Spence. He was a retired Operator for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District. He was a United States Army Veteran and served in Vietnam. John's unit the Mud Rats US-1-18 529 14602 the year 1968 was exposed to Agent Orange. His export helicopter was shot down and he was MIA for 3 days. He spent 18 months at the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC. He received the Purple Heart and that war did not destroy his kind and gentle soul. We are proud to call him our dad and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, John Wesley Spence and his companion, Susan Kellam, of Nassawadox, VA, William Shawn Spence and his wife, Heather, of Oyster, VA, Terry Talbott Kelly and her husband, Richard, of Parksley, VA, Roy "Billy" Talbott of Birdsnest, John Thomas Talbott and his wife, Donna, of Cincinnati, OH, Louis Wayne Talbott and his wife, Brenda, of Pungoteague, VA; 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, I. Thomas Spence and a daughter, Cindy "Dee Dee" Churn.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be conducted Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Fairview Lawn Cemetery with Reverend Rob Kelly officiating. Family will join friends at Doughty Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 7 to 8:30 PM.
