Janie Sue Hackworth Rhodes, 85, wife of the late Donald A. Rhodes and a resident of Quinby, Virginia, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. A native of Florence, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Trav T. Hackworth and the late Pauline Gonce Hackworth. She was predeceased by her two brothers L. T. Hackworth and Ike Hackworth, both of Florence. She graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, attended Memphis Academy of Art, and received a degree in art education from West Virginia State University. Mrs. Rhodes was an artist in residence at West Virginia Institute of Technology in Montgomery, West Virginia. Sue overcame childhood paralysis due to polio by becoming an excellent swimmer. She went on to be active in the Girl Scouts and was a majorette in the Coffee High School Band. Growing up on a farm she had a love of animals and fond memories of riding her pony to town. Having two older brothers she developed great survival skills and was proud when she learned Morse code faster than they did. Her first job was in the office of the family business, The Florence Packing Company. While attending college in Columbia she met Don Rhodes, an engineering student at the University of Missouri. Don was a Naval Veteran of World War II and one of the few old enough to grow sideburns for the Old South Ball at the K.A. fraternity. After their marriage Don was employed by Union Carbide and they moved to Ohio, Oregon, West Virginia, and Youngstown, New York. In each place they made friends that they kept all of their lives. Sue would always find a group of artists to inspire her creativity and our house always smelled of turpentine and linseed oil. Sue was talented in many media including oils, sculpture, mosaic and ceramics. They retired to Florence and restored the family home on Chisholm Road and the lake house on Shoals Creek. They were members of the Turtle Point Country Club where Don played golf and they both enjoyed boating. They were also active members of the First Presbyterian Church. Sue is survived by her daughter, Dr. Paula R. Cameron and son-in-law, Dr. Charles E. Cameron and granddaughter, Vera Jane Cameron, all of Quinby; brother-in-law, Richard Rhodes of South Bend, IN; nieces, Vickie Pewitt and Irene Hackworth of Florence; great nephew, Isaac Hackworth of Florence; and cousins, Robert Gonce of Florence, Mary Nell Gonce King of Stevenson, AL, Susan Crowe of Decator, GA, and John P. Wilke of Jackson, MS. A celebration of life service will be planned in the spring in Florence.
