Jane Mihalyka Gibson, of Chesapeake, died Thursday, April 3, 2008, having fought cancer for eight years. She was a graduate of Virginia Wesleyan College and taught in the Virginia Beach School system for thirty years. She loved children and never missed a single teaching day. She volunteered for the Chesapeake Jubilee for more than twenty years, serving one term as its president, and was an organizing member of the Great Bridge Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She grew up in Lakewood, Ohio but spent summers with her parents at their cottage on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She was known as an especially fine skier. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Eugene E. Mihalyka of Cherrystone Neck, VA, a brother, George K. Mihalyka of Vicksburg, Mississippi, a daughter, Charlotte Merritt Gibson of Chesapeake, and a cousin, William G. Rasch of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:00 PM from the Christ Episcopal Church in Eastville with the Rev. Dr. Robert Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
