James Wise Latimer, 88, husband of the late Constance Lambert Buckingham Latimer and a resident of Norfolk, VA, passed away after a long illness on December 11, 2010 at Sentara Nursing Home, Norfolk, VA. A native of Kiptopeke, he was the son of the late James Burleigh Latimer and the late Dana Wise Latimer. Wise attended Capeville United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Cape Charles High School. He was a combat veteran of WWII, serving in the European Theater including the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from Valley Poultry and Produce Company and was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Wise was an avid gardener, growing many vegetables and over 100 beautiful rose bushes. He was a sportsman all his life and enjoyed fishing and hunting on the Eastern Shore. His great-grandfather, Capt. George Edward White, taught Wise to fish when he was three years old. When other people couldn't get a bite, Wise would be pulling them in two at a time. Survivors include three children, Dana L. VanDyke and husband Danhof of Eastville, James Burleigh Latimer II, and wife Joanne of Kiptopeke, and Larry Thomas Latimer and wife Sherry of Norfolk; one sister, Katherine L. Beck of Chester, VA; six grandchildren, Jonathan F. McIvor of Richmond, Brandon F. McIvor and wife Gina of Eastville, Katherine M. Wyndham and husband William of Norfolk, Matthew B. Latimer and wife Beth of Olympia, WA, Anne M. Latimer of Norfolk and Benjamin Scott Latimer and wife Rochelle of Virginia Beach; eight great-grandchildren, Sophia McIvor, Amanda Juhasz McIvor, Savannah Wyndham, Thomas Hruska, Paige Latimer, Ethan Latimer, William Latimer and Dimetrie Pyatt. Mr. Latimer was predeceased by his beloved "Aunt" Lucille Latimer and brothers, Perry and Royce Latimer. A graveside service will be held at the Capeville Masonic Cemetery Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at 2:00 PM with Pastor Elizabeth Lutz officiating. A reception will follow in the Capeville United Methodist Church Social Hall. Family will join friends Tuesday, December 14, 2010 from 7 to 8:30 PM at the Wilkins-Doughty Funeral Home, Cape Charles, Virginia.
