Mr. Jack W. Ward, 85, of Salisbury died October 28, 2006 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. He was born July 6, 1921 on a farm overlooking the Occohannock Creek near Wardtown, Va., and grew up during his school years in Nassawadox. He was the oldest son of the late Willard M. Ward and the late Thelma Hopkins Ward and was preceded in death by a brother Haywood D. Ward and a sister Elaine Ward Buelow. He retired from WBOC after a 46 year career in broadcasting as the Vice President/Assistant to the President of Draper Communications. He was the man who helped steer WBOC from radio to television. In 1941 Mr. Ward started out as a transmitter and studio operator and within twelve years he was the Chief Engineer. In 1970 he was promoted to Production Manager in Charge of operations. By the late 1970's Mr. Ward became the Vice President of the Broadcast Division under three different owners: Peninsula Broadcasting Co., The A.S. Abell Co., and Draper Communications, Inc. He was a kind man who endeavored to be kind to those who didn't like him as well at those who did. He is survived by his wife of over sixty years, Bernetta Evans Ward. A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 5th at 1:00 pm from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 215 Parker Road, Salisbury, Maryland, where he was an active member for many decades. Mr. Sam Martin will be officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Red Bank Cemetery, Marionville, Virginia.
