Isabelle B. Cosby, 103, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Woodhaven Hall at The Williamsburg Landing. Born on June 6, 1907 in Elizabeth, New Jersey to John C. Bennett and Roberta Hodges Bennett, Mrs. Cosby celebrated her 100th birthday in 2007 with family and friends surrounding her at a party she hosted at The Williamsburg Landing and a family party hosted by her nephews. A 1928 graduate of Swarthmore College, Mrs. Cosby lived and worked in New York where she met and married Henry Monroe. Together they moved to Cuba where they lived for twelve years on a 4,000 acre henequen plantation on the beautiful north coast of Cuba, near the town of Cardenas. Following her husband's passing, she moved to Virginia where she met and married Col. William Lee Cosby Jr. They made their home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Following his death, Mrs. Cosby moved to The Williamsburg Landing in 1988. Mrs. Cosby's love for Swarthmore College never wavered over the years, and she established the Katherine Hodges Bennett Tappen Scholarship Fund in honor of her sister, and where the school has a beautiful garden named in Mrs. Cosby's honor. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cosby was predeceased by her first husband Henry Monroe and her second husband William Lee Cosby Jr. She is survived by her nephews and their spouses, Henry and Ann Tappen of Maryville, TN; John and Melanie Tappen of Pueblo, CO; and Mark Tappen and Judith Benedict of Wolcott, NY. She also leaves to cherish her memory her close friends, Kathy and Reg Exton of Williamsburg, VA. Mrs. Cosby requested no memorial service and will be buried beside her late husband, Col. William Lee Cosby Jr. in Cape Charles Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
