Helen Riggin Thorne, 101, wife of the late W. Clarke Thorne and a resident of Exmore, passed away Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Heritage Hall Healthcare. A native of Willis Wharf, she was the daughter of the late Henry S. and Clarissa Moore Riggin. She was a member of the Exmore Baptist Church, Past Worthy Matron and member of the Onancock Order of Easter Star Chapter # 82, Grand Ester of the State of Virginia Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Northampton Women's Club. She was a graduate of Mary Washington University and taught at Accomack County Public Schools. Survivors include a sister, Mary Riggin Pawl and her husband George of Merritt Island, FL, six nieces; Helen Walker, Celeste Costin, Frances Underhill, Peggy Verville, Kay Martin and Joan Riggin, and a nephew, Charles Corbin and numerous great nieces and nephews. Mrs. Thorne was predeceased by five sisters, Etta Corbin, Maude Marshall, Eula Bloxom, Ola Bonniwell, Gladys Drummond, and two brothers, Emmett and Clarence Riggin. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at 2:00pm at the Exmore Baptist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Carpenter and Mr. Kemmie Dize officiating.
