Harold Joseph Goldstine, better known as Goldy, husband of the late Mary Elizabeth Richardson Goldstine, and the late Jeanette Blandon Orr Goldstine and a resident of Exmore, VA, passed away Friday, January 30, 2015 at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Nassawadox, VA just 23 days short of his goal to celebrate his 102nd birthday. A native of Groton, NY, he was the son of the late Benn Goldstine and the late Grace Louise Morse Goldstine.
Born in Groton, New York, February 22, 1913, Goldy married Mary E. Richardson of Oswego, New York in 1934. Following service in the Depression Era Civilian Conservation Corps he joined the Army during World War II.
Believed to be the oldest World War II Veteran on the Eastern Shore, he was recognized for Superior Service in the European, African-Middle Eastern Campaign, and Honorably Discharged on March 23, 1946. He was thrilled to join other Eastern Shore veterans on a bus trip to the World War II Memorial in Washington several years ago.
Goldy and Mary, with their only child, Jim, moved to the little town of Baldwinsville, New York where he was an agent for John Hancock Life Insurance. He was considered a person you could count on to help in times of need. Ill, Mary, died after 32 years of marriage. In a Florida retirement with his second wife, Jeanette, he volunteered countless hours of his time shredding paper at the Hospice hospital in Palm Beach.
In 1995, after 28 years of marriage, Jeanette died. In 2003 he moved to his military grandson's unoccupied home next door to son Jim and wife Dawn. He shared the home with other family members, Marguerite Rulison, and Gerda Halbig. A regular attendee of Bethel United Methodist Church in Jamesville, and despite the decline of his vision, he continued working as a volunteer paper shredder at Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox. He laughed off his disability with the statement, "What's better than a blind shredder?" He often said, "I am most grateful for volunteer work. It pays off better than anything"
The Masonic Order, like that of his father, was his other passion. He proudly received his 50 year Masonic pin from the members of the Broadwater Lodge in Nassawadox.
As his strength failed he reluctantly gave up volunteering. Almost one year ago he became a resident of Heritage Hall.
Always an optimist with an indomitable spirit, Goldy was a kind and generous man who was much loved and inspired by all who knew him. His birthday will be celebrated at his memorial service at 2:00 P.M. on February 22, 2015 at the Doughty Funeral Home.
He is survived by a son, James Goldstine and his wife, Dawn, of Occohannock Neck, VA; step-daughter, Leslie Pettit of Idaho; sister-in-law, Carol Preston of Bluffton, SC; brother-in-law, James Richardson and his wife, Norma, of Norfolk, VA; two grandchildren, Chris Goldstine and his wife, Linda, of Occohannock Neck, Shara Walden and her husband, Jeffrey, of Freeville, NY; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Goldstine of Richmond, VA, Grace Walden of Freeville, Trevor Walden of Freeville; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins across the country.
