Gladys Custis Drummond, 96, a resident of Bay Colony, Dagsboro, DE, formerly of Exmore, VA, passed away Monday, February 16, 2009 at Renaissance Nursing Center in Millsboro, DE. A native of Willis Wharf, VA, she was the daughter of the late Henry S. Riggin and Clarissa Moore Riggin. Mrs. Drummond was a retired teacher, having taught in Northampton County Public Schools for thirty-two years. In 1962 she was presented the Teacher of the Year Award. She was a graduate of Mary Washington College and Longwood College. In 1936 she married Goodson Custis of Craddockville, Va. They operated Custis Brothers Store in Exmore, Va. until his death in October 1948. In 1951 she married Berry F. Drummond and they resided in Exmore until his death in July 1981. Mrs. Drummond was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, the Ruth Group Missionary organization and a former Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, Virginia Retired Teachers Association, past member of the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club, and past president of Eastern Shore Business and Professional Women's Club. Survivors include her daughter, Kay Custis Martin and her husband Trey, granddaughter, Lisa Martin Truitt and her husband, Christopher Von Truitt, grandson, Walter B. Martin IV; great-grandson, Martin Coulter Truitt; and great-granddaughter, Emily Alissa Truitt; two sisters, Helen R. Thorne of Exmore, and Mary C. Pawl and her husband, Col. George Pawl of Melbourne, FL; and four nieces, Celeste Costin, Helen Walker, Frances Underhill, and Peggy Verville; and a nephew, Charles Corbin. A memorial service will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church on Friday, February 20, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. L. Raymond McGarr and the Rev. Tammy Estep officiating.
