Gladys Anderson

February 14, 1918 — May 16, 2015

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother took a walk to heaven on May 16, 2015. Gladys Margaret Humphrey Anderson was recuperating in Nassawadox, VA, from pneumonia when her frail body failed her strong mind. Mom joins her best friend and husband George (Bud) and four siblings, Marjorie Root, Gary Humphrey, Ted Humphrey and Grace (Dee Dee) Pease, and her parents Fred and Natalie Humphrey in their adventure beyond our knowledge. She leaves behind to remember her fondly her three children and spouses, eight grands, and 16 great grands. Son George (Skip) Anderson and daughter-in-law Mary Jane, daughter Kathee Gladden and son-in-law Alan, and daughter Natalie Hale and their many children and grands have been fortunate to enjoy Mom's company for many of her 97 years everywhere from Connecticut to Europe to Virginia. Gladys moved with Bud and the children to France and later to Berlin where she bravely weathered foreign languages and cultures and endeared herself to Girl Scouting overseas and to hospital volunteer programs. Upon her return to the States she enjoyed working for an art collector for whom she attended auctions and bid on eclectic pieces of art. Later she was office receptionist for a large general contractor in Norfolk VA, and later still she designed flower arrangements for a local florist. Mom moved from New Jersey after Daddy died and settled in Chesapeake where she lived an active and full life in the Greenbrier area for 35 years. Gladys was very active in senior activities in the Sassies of Chesapeake, and with her church groups at Oak Grove UMC in Chesapeake, and she enjoyed many years of being a poll worker during elections. She traveled regularly to Maine to spend time with her brother Ted and his partner Henry Holland, and George (Skip) and Mary Jane took her on a memorable trip to Scotland a few years ago where she enjoyed both the Tatoo and reaching her arm deep into a cow (statue) at James Herriot's museum. Gladys moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia and has been residing with Kathee and Alan for the past 3 years. Her comfort here was in no small part thanks to the loving care Eric and Michelle often provided. Our mother has been our friend and our confidante and our anchor through so many years. We share many common memories and cherish just as many private ones. We love you, Mom and miss you very much. Memorials may be made to S.P.C.A. Animal Shelter, Post Office Box 164, Onley, Virginia 23418. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.doughtyfuneralhome.com Arrangements were made by Doughty Funeral Home in Exmore, Virginia.
