Frederick Rudolph William Martin, passed away peacefully at Sealand, his residence near Eastville, on Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006. He was 85. He was born in Brentwood, L. I., son of the late Eugene J. Martin, an architect and native of Kreuzlingen, Switzerland and Rose Marie Roth, a ballerina and native of Wurzburg, Bavaria. While working for Glenn L. Martin Aircraft he built a lightning to sail the Chesapeake. He soon served as acting squad leader and technician sergeant in World War II. Prior to moving to the Shore in 1978 Mr. Martin, a cabinetmaker, organic husbandman, and individual of many talents, specialized in the research and restoration of colonial homes and furniture. Upon returning to Long Island from Maine he built the first split-level home in Westhampton Beach. Although pursued by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Flynt, founders of Historic Deerfield, and by Mystic Seaport, Mr. Martin remained on the island where he restored the Customs House in Sag Harbor for the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities. He is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years ‘Wendy' Winifred R. Bachman Martin with whom he coauthored 'Arlington: Earnest Money, Clouded Title?'. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to S.P.C.A. Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 164, Onley, Va. 23418 or to Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company, Bloxom, Va. 23308 Arrangements were made by Doughty Funeral Home, Exmore and are private in keeping with his wishes.
