Franklin Russell Mullaly of Exmore, VA, passed away at Heritage Hall in Nassawadox Friday, April 18, 2008 after a long illness. He was 89. Born in Northampton, MA and reared in Easthampton, he was the son of the late Frank James and Susan Cranson Mullaly. Mr. Mullaly was a graduate of American International College in Springfield, MA and the first male graduate of Smith College, Northampton, MA. He did graduate work at West Virginia and Johns Hopkins Universities after serving for four years in the Army during World War II. He became Associate Professor of History and Economics at Waynesburg College, PA for 7 years, after which he entered the National Park Service as a Historian and, later the Department of Energy. Mr. Mullaly was a published historical researcher and a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants. The Mullalys retired to the Shore in 1981 where they joined Painter-Garrison United Methodist Church. Mr. Mullaly is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Ethel Alworth Downing, a son, Franklin Russell Jr. and his wife Diane of Preston, MD, a grandson, James Edward Mullaly of Boca Raton, FL, and a sister, Helen Mullaly Gallant of Englewood, FL. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert L. Mullaly and Richard L. Mullaly. Private funeral services were held Sunday, April 20, 2008 at 2:00 PM from the graveside of Belle Haven Cemetery. The Rev. J. Robert Schoeman officiated.
