Florence Mears

Florence Upshur Mears, 87, died peacefully on Saturday, June 14th. She was born to the late Giles Crowder Upshur and Jewel Mears Upshur, September 14, 1926. Florence graduated from Eastville High School and received a B.A. in English from Duke University. She married Arthur Wainhouse Downing Mears, M.D. and lived in Belle Haven, Virginia until his death in 1977 after which she moved to Machipongo, Virginia. Florence was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and The Garden Club of the Eastern Shore. She is survived by a brother, Giles Crowder Upshur, Jr.; three children, Corinne Mears Dacey (Ralph G. Dacey, Jr. M.D.), Arthur Wainhouse Downing Mears, Jr. (Lisa Mosbacher Mears), Nan Mears Woodard and 6 grandchildren, Elizabeth Dacey Cunningham, Ralph Gerard Dacey, III, Robert Whitney Mears, Parker Upshur Mears, Bayly Littleton Mears and Adelaide Woodard. She was preceded in death by her brother, Otho Frederick Upshur and sister, Jewel Upshur Beach. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Belle Haven Cemetery with Reverend Daniel Crockett officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, PO Box 367, Eastville, VA 23347 or The Garden Club of the Eastern Shore, c/o Mrs. Mina S. Turner, P. O.
