Elizabeth H. (View Video Tribute) Lafferty

Elizabeth Hamblin Lafferty, a resident of Cheriton, VA, died October 15, 2009 at her residence. Born September 20, 1909, she was the eldest daughter of Larry H. and Minnie Smith Hamblin. She was married to Grover Lafferty Sr. for 63 years. She lived on Myrtle Island as well as on a houseboat until she moved to the mainland for school. She loved her family, flowers, and all wildlife. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Cheriton Fire Department for thirty years, served as the president in 1965, and secretary/treasurer for four years. She was a member of Travis Chapel United Methodist Church in Oyster, VA. She is survived by her children, Edward Lee Lafferty of Cape Charles, VA, Mary L. Bennett of Cheriton, Barbara L. Dickerson of Jamesville, VA, Frank J. Lafferty and his wife Mary of Assawoman,VA, Charlotte L. Whitman and her husband George of Machipongo, VA, Grover Lee Lafferty Jr. and his wife Beth of Bloxom, VA, Abbie L. Borum and her husband Larry of Orlando, FL, Colleen L. Makin of Dover , DE, and Betty Jo Petty and her husband Bill of Dover. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren; three nieces and a nephew; and a special cousin, Evelyn Shrieves of Chesapeake, VA. Other than her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Bart Lafferty in 2003; and grandchildren, Reese B. Smith, Daniel Floyd Smith, and Crystle Star Neidig; sisters, Mae Lafferty Glaxner, and Addie Hamblin Carpenter; and brothers, Edward J. Lafferty, Albert Lafferty, and James Edward Hamblin; two sons-in-law, Floyd L. Smith Sr. and Douglas D. Dickerson. A graveside service will be held Sunday, October 18, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Cape Charles Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Layne officiating. A viewing will be held Saturday from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the Wilkins-Doughty Funeral Home in Cape Charles. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Travis Chapel United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 106, Cheriton, VA 23316.
