Dorothy Douglass Kellam, 92, of Belle Haven, Virginia died on Sunday, January 29, 2006. She was born in Luverne, Alabama in 1913, and later moved to Norfolk, VA. She was the widow of Lucius J. Kellam, Jr., of Belle Haven, VA and the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ralph B. Douglass of Norfolk. She attended Mary Baldwin College and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. In 1979 she received the Emily Smith Medallion from Mary Baldwin College for "dedication to civic and community concerns and for appreciation of beauty and her effort to preserve Virginia heritage". In addition to her strong commitment to her family, Dot's passion was gardening and the beautification of her surroundings. She was twice president of the Garden Club of the Eastern Shore. She was the 25th president of the Garden Club of Virginia and received the Massie Medal for Distinguished Achievement. She was also chairman of the Restoration Committee of the Garden Club of Virginia. She was a Member-at-Large of the Garden Club of America, chairman of that group and a member of the board. She was a member, and past vestry member of St. George's Episcopal Church. She had been active with the Eastern Shore Historical Society and Shore Memorial Hospital. Surviving Mrs. Kellam are her daughter, Douglass Patterson, and her husband, Hugh, her son, Lucius J. Kellam, III, and his wife, Tata, , seven grandchildren, Scott Patterson, Christopher Patterson, Lucinda Jones, Luke Kellam, Caroline Patterson, Whit Kellam, and Anna Murray, and thirteen great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Alan B. Hooker at 11 am on Friday, February 3, 2006 at the family cemetery at her home, Mount Pleasant, in Belle Haven, Virginia.
