David Allen "Dave" Berg

David A. "Dave" Berg, 75, of Cape Charles, VA passed away Tuesday, August 2nd, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Jamestown, New York, he was the son of Editha and Chester Berg. He is survived by his wife Ann, of 52 years; his daughter Karen of Virginia Beach and son John, daughter-n-law Carol and granddaughter Annika of Tiburon, California; sister Marilyn Spoerl of Hampton, New Hampshire; sister-in-law Julia Trask of Greenville, South Carolina; and 5 nieces and nephews. He graduated from Jamestown High School and received a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in 1958. While at MIT he belonged to the SAE fraternity and played ice hockey. After college Dave began his long and successful career in the bearing business at New Hampshire Ball Bearing in Peterborough, New Hampshire. He ultimately became Senior Vice President. After 18 years in New Hampshire, he moved to Chesapeake, Virginia and became president and CEO of Cooper Bearing in Virginia Beach. The last part of his career he held various posts for Emerson Electric splitting his time between Syracuse, New York, Valparaiso, Indiana and home in Virginia. He served for six years in the United States Army Reserve, retiring as a captain in the Corps of Engineers. He was a long-time member of the Rotary Club and Amoskeag Veterans in Peterborough and the Lions Club in Chesapeake. He also served on the board of directors of the Scott Farrah Home. A lifelong Christian, he was a trustee of the Union Congregational Church in Peterborough and a member of the Great Bridge Presbyterian in Chesapeake, and Holmes Presbyterian Church of Cape Charles Virginia. Dave was proud of his Swedish heritage. He was private and modest in his philanthropic efforts. He gave his children the love of sports, especially skiing, and loved to fish and tell "fish stories". He loved nothing more than being on the sidelines with Ann for John and Karen's many athletic endeavors. He loved the Boston Red Sox, playing bridge and any day at the beach. He felt lucky to have held onto his closest friends from kindergarten to the last moments of his life. A memorial service will be held Friday August 5, at 11:00 AM at Great Bridge Presbyterian Church, 333 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Care of the Eastern Shore, 165 Market Street, Suite 3, Onancock, VA 23417 or the Music Ministry at Great Bridge Presbyterian Church.
