Clifton Haley Doughty, Sr.

October 1, 1927 — January 5, 2018

Clifton Haley Doughty Sr. passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on January 5, 2018, with family by his side. He was born in Eastville, Virginia, on October 1, 1927 to Claude Clarence Doughty Sr. and Hattie Yula Gregory Doughty.

Known to many as "Razz," Clifton was educated in Northampton County and was the youngest of siblings, Claude Clarence Doughty Jr., Raymond Doughty Sr., James E. Doughty, William Doughty, Annie Mae Doughty Dean, Julia Elizabeth Doughty Wood, Thomas Doughty and Andrew Gregory Doughty. Clifton was blessed by several nieces, nephews and their spouses and children, including Lilly Caporella (husband Tony), Ray Doughty (wife Ann), Bill Dean (wife Tina), Cindy Prahl (husband Wilmer), Calvin Wood (wife Sarah), Eula Mae Parks (husband Gerald), Linda Jones (husband John) and Faye Kintz.

Clifton enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and served 3 years. After an honorable discharge at the end of WW II he married Betty Sarah Parker on February 16, 1949. They had a son, Gregory, who was later adopted by Betty's subsequent husband, Al Nixon. Gregory Nixon was reunited with Clifton within the last 10 years. He and his wife, Vicki, reside in Crystal River, FL, and have sons, Paul Nixon (wife Christy) and Dave Mitchell (wife Samantha) and grandchildren, Landon (wife Taylor), Makaylah Nixon and Mason Mitchell.

On November 15, 1951, Clifton married Elva Lee Marshall. They made their home in Salisbury, MD, and later in Chance, MD, where they raised two sons, Clifton Haley Doughty Jr. (deceased in 2008) and Samuel W. Doughty Sr. During this chapter of his life, Clifton worked for Delmarva Power for 33 years as a respected lineman and supervisor. He loved boating and fishing on the Tangier Sound. Some years later, Samuel and wife, Cheryl, had a son, Samuel W. Doughty Jr. (wife Rebecca) who named Clifton's great granddaughter, Haley, after him. They live in Nashville, TN. Samuel and Cheryl's daughter, Becca Doughty, lives in Salisbury. They have enjoyed many fishing adventures and golf cart rides with their Pop Pop.

After Elva's passing, Clifton was blessed to find love again with Doris Polliard Parsons. They were married October 22, 1983, and lived and traveled in Salisbury, Bishopville, Fort Meyers, Virginia Landing and Willis Wharf. Clifton picked up the sport of golfing and RV living. Their love story ended with her death in February of 2013. Shortly afterward, Clifton moved to the neighborhood of Sanborn Terrace in Salisbury to be closer to his family. He served as the unofficial mayor of the cul-de-sac, scooting around in his golf cart with little dog, Roxy, and continuing to enjoy fishing on the Doughty boat.

Living over 90 years, Cliff had a strong spirit and good medical care. Dr. P.J. Mehta has provided excellent care and led him to many highly qualified specialists as needed. He especially liked Dr. Mehta's sense of style, and his office associates, Thelma and Karen. Coastal Hospice provided compassionate care in the last few weeks, allowing him to live at home almost to the last day.

Cliff loved the Lord wholeheartedly since a young man, and was very active in various ministries over his lifetime. He started a Baptist church in Deal Island in the early 80's. The family is grateful for the congregations of Maranatha Baptist Church in Exmore, VA, and Immanuel Baptist Church in Salisbury, MD, as well as the care of Coastal Hospice in Salisbury, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations to either of these organizations in Clifton's name would be a blessing.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at 4:00 PM at Doughty Funeral Home with Reverend Mike Muender officiating. Family will join friends at funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private in Mount Holly Cemetery.
