Carl Francis Baren

August 12, 1930 — July 9, 2016

Carl Francis Baren, age 85, passed away on July 9, 2016 peacefully with his family at his side. He was born August 12, 1930 in Brooklyn NY to Carol J. and Helen W. Baren.

Carl was a fisheries biologist who was educated at NY University and Columbia University. He retired from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Essex Jct., VT at age 70 at his wife's insistence.

Carl met his wife, Lois Keidel Baren, while fixing a radio for her while she attended Columbia. They were married May 25, 1963 in New City, NY.

Carl was very dedicated to his wife, and children, along with the many animals the family had. He especially loved all of their Springer Spaniels, Angie, Rosie and Daisy Mae. None of the animals in the Baren household were ever thin as dad always fed them at least half his dinner, and shared all of his treats and snacks.

Carl moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia after Lois died to be with his older daughter Alicia and her family. He never wanted to be alone and missed the great family dinners he used to have, a tradition that Alicia still carries on to this day. Carl loved the First Avenue porch parties in Vermont where all the neighbors would gather and have a glass of wine on Friday night. Those were some of his favorite memories, where Lois would make too much food and everyone would enjoy the evening together.

Carl is survived by his two sisters, Dolores Grant, and Ann Baren, his two daughters, Alicia Brady and her husband Robert, and Claudia Brousseau and her husband Peter, his two grandchildren, Lauren Sjoholm-Sierchio, and Carl F. Brady, his two sisters in law Helen Harper, and Wilma Keidel, along with two nephews Terry, and wife Mary, and Larry Harper, along with James and Elizabeth.

He is predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Lois Keidel Baren, his parents Carol and Helen Baren, his brothers in law, Al Grant, and Gary Harper, and his dogs Angie and Rosie.

Services will be held at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cape Charles, VA at 11am on Friday, July 15, 2016, with both Carl and Lois's ashes being interred in the St. Charles Columbarium afterwards. There will be a separate memorial service in St. Augustine's Church in Montpelier VT at a later date.

The family asks in lieu of flowers that a donation be made to the Great Dane Rescue of New England (GDRNE) PO Box 100083, Cranston, RI 02910, or a charity of one's choice that benefits dogs in some way.
