Bonnie (Raye) Mears Riggan, 78, of Eastville, Virginia, passed away on February 22, 2025. Born on February 23,1946, in Horntown, Virginia, she was the daughter of Dorothy Wessells Webb Taylor and Royce Wade Mears. Bonnie was a beloved member of her community and a special education teacher.
Bonnie graduated from Atlantic High School before attending Goldey-Beacom College and later Old Dominion University, which laid the foundation for her lifelong dedication to education. She spent many years teaching special education at Northampton County Public Schools, where her kindness, patience, and commitment impacted countless children and families.
Known for her sweet nature and sense of humor, Bonnie had a deep love for her family and animals. An avid horse enthusiast, she expressed her passion for animals in many ways. She also found joy in shopping, delighting in the simple pleasure of finding something special.
Bonnie is survived by her loving husband, Ronald Riggan; her children, Jennifer Pruitt (Jimmy), Elaine Johnson, Rebecca Lusk (Bo), and J.E.B. Johnson (Erica); step-sons, Jimmy Riggan (Margie) and John Riggan (Laurie); siblings, Patsy Bell, Henry Wessells (Linda), Harry Wessells (Sue), and Vickie Mears Bailey; grandchildren, Noah Sharbor, Lucy Lusk, Stella Lusk, Steve Pruitt, Austin Perry-Pruitt, Sidney Pruitt, Brooks Johnson, Cora Johnson, Edmond Johnson, and Bette Johnson; step-grandchildren, James and Marissa Riggan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather Harry Wessells, and her second husband, Pres Trower III.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at Cheriton Baptist Church, where Bonnie and Ron were longtime members, officiated by Dr. Charles Peterson, will celebrate Bonnie’s life and the incredible love, laughter, and warmth she brought to all who knew her. Family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall immediately afterwards. A private burial will follow on Monday, March 3, 2025, at Downing Cemetery.
Bonnie’s legacy as a devoted educator and loving family member will continue to inspire all those she touched.
