Wilmer J. Hancock, Jr., 95, passed away May 22, 2014, in a local hospital. He was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Cordelia Massey Hancock. He was a native of the Eastern Shore of Virginia and a longtime member of Baylake United Methodist Church where he previously served on the Administrative Board of Directors and Finance Committee. Mr. Hancock was Vice-President and General Manager of the Vending Division of the Coca Cola Bottling Company of Norfolk where he was employed forty-one years. He was past President of Bayside Lions Club. He was also a disabled veteran of World War II where he was in the first wave to hit Normandy and later suffered wounds in the Battle of Saint-Lo, France resulting in the loss of his right arm. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and the Purple Heart for combat wounds. He was a graduate of Willis Wharf High School in Exmore, VA. Bill or Billy, as he was known leaves behind two nieces, Mrs. Jane Yingst of Jacksonville, FL and Mrs. Esther Smolleck of Las Cruces, NM, and a cousin, Ms. Ann Cathey of Duluth, GA. A funeral will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel with the Rev. James R. Driscoll officiating. A graveside service with military honors will will be held at 2:00 PM in Belle Haven Cemetery on the Eastern Shore with Doughty Funeral Home in charge and Rev. Judy Worthington officiating. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel Wednesday, May 28, 2014, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bayside Lions Club or Baylake United Methodist Church.
