Bernice Custis Walls

Bernice Custis Walls, 89, wife of the late James S. Walls, and a resident of Onley, VA, died Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Nassawadox. Born March 7, 1920 in Craddock Neck, she was the daughter of the late Will and Stella Bull Custis. She was a retired interior house painter and treasured the many friendships she made during her career. Bernice loved her family, her neighbors, and her many friends at Onley United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her home, working in her yard and helping others until her health declined recently. Bernice is survived by her son, James S. Walls Jr.; two sisters, Mary Hargis and Ardis Haines; a granddaughter, Natasha McConnaughy and her husband Edward; a great granddaughter, Ashley McConnaughy; a special niece, Nancy Mears; and many other nieces and nephews. Other than her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Drummond and Nellie Turner, two brothers, Arthur Custis and West Custis, and a daughter-in-law, Mary Margaret Walls. A funeral service will be held Monday, November 16, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Doughty Funeral Home in Exmore with the Rev. Charles Parks III officiating. Interment will follow in the Parksley Cemetery. Family will join friends Sunday evening from 7 to 8:30 in Doughty Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be sent to Onley United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 98, Onley, Virginia 23418.
