Alvin Louis Hubbard

Alvin Louis Hubbard died peacefully at the age of 91 on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the Hermitage following a long battle with dementia. He was born in Richmond, Virginia on April 27, 1919, one of six sons of Hessie Mansfield Hubbard and Clara Hobson Hubbard. Three brothers, Harry Hubbard of Hampton, Virginia, and Forrest Hubbard and Hessie Hubbard of Richmond, Virginia predeceased Alvin, as well as his beloved wife, Alma Jane Swearingen Hubbard. He is survived by his brothers, Earl Hubbard of Richmond, and Warren Hubbard of Colonial Heights, Virginia; his son, Richard L. Hubbard and his wife, Catharine of Eastville; and his three grandsons, Richard Lee Hubbard and his wife, Holly Annon Hubbard, John Philip Hubbard, and Scott Holmes Hubbard all of the Eastern Shore. Alvin also has two great grandsons, Gibson Lee Hubbard, and Palmer Joseph Hubbard sons of Richard Lee and Holly Hubbard. Alvin grew up in Richmond's Churchill neighborhood during the depression. He attended John Marshall High School where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. He also went to the William and Mary Extension at Richmond Professional Institute. He was a distinguished veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Force with B17s in England, North Africa, and Italy. Prior to going to war in Europe, Alvin married Jane Swearingen in Denver, Colorado and after returning to the United States, they made their home in Richmond. The majority of his career was in the oil business in various locations throughout Virginia. Alvin retired as Vice President of Little Oil Company of Richmond, and then went to work for Colonial Fuel Oils, Inc. in Mechanicsville. He moved to the Eastern Shore in the early 90's to be closer to his son and his family. Alvin was a member of the Lakeside Lions Club of Richmond, Trustee of St. John's United Church of Christ of Richmond as well as a member of the Sales and Marketing Executives of Richmond, The Downtown Club, and Willow Oaks Country Club of Richmond. He prided himself on being known as a Virginian and a native Richmonder and was always regarded as a true Southern gentleman by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held on March 5, 2011 at 1:00 at Christ Church, Eastville. The family invites friends and relatives to join them after the ceremony at their home, Old Castle, to share their stories and memories.
